Understanding Reference and Source API fields

Prev

Using the JobReference Field for Reliable Traceability

The JobReference field is a unique identifier that allows you to trace and correlate document generation jobs with records in your source system—such as a case number, customer code, or transaction ID. This is especially useful for troubleshooting or auditing failed jobs, as it enables efficient fault finding by linking the job to a known system value. We recommend using unique, system-related identifiers and avoiding any personally identifiable information (PII) in this field. Following this best practice helps ensure secure, consistent, and easily traceable document processes.

Defining the Source Field for Better Reporting and Insights

The Source field is used to indicate the originating department, product, or source system for each document generation job. This value aligns with the organizational structure configured in your DocFusion settings and enables meaningful grouping and reporting of job data. By correctly specifying the Source, you gain valuable insights into document generation volumes and patterns—supporting internal back-billing, performance tracking, and usage analysis across business units. If this field is omitted or inaccurately set, jobs will be assigned to a default group, limiting your ability to analyze usage by department, product, or source system. For optimal tracking and reporting, we strongly recommend setting this field consistently and accurately based on your organistational structure.
